A bottoming tap is specifically designed to create threads all the way to the bottom of a blind hole. This type of tap has a very short taper or sometimes no taper at all, which allows it to reach the end of the hole and cleanly cut threads in that final part. This makes it essential for applications where flushness is critical, and there isn't a need for the gradual threading action found in other tap types.

In contrast, a taper tap starts with a long taper that gradually transitions to the full thread diameter, allowing for easier entry into the hole. While it helps guide the tap and reduce the chance of misalignment, it does not thread down to the very end, making it unsuitable for cases where complete threading to the bottom is necessary.

The plug tap has a slightly shorter taper than the taper tap, facilitating easier alignment and starting in the hole, but it still does not reach the bottom like a bottoming tap does. Finally, a die tap is used for cutting threads on the outside of screws and does not apply to internal threading, which is the focus of this question. Thus, the bottoming tap is the appropriate choice for situations requiring full-depth threading.
